Porcini season

Just as we start thinking, rather wistfully, that Summer is almost over there is a sudden onslaught of activity in the hills and forests. It seems as though every small mountain village has been stretched to bursting with Summer visitors, garlands of lights and candles have been sparkling away, fireworks have been exploding in the night sky and now the buzz has shifted to the deep green undergrowth. This is serious business too. Unless you live locally you can’t just park up and dig around in the forest, certainly you can’t take any local produce away – there are signs all over the place telling you this. But on some hillsides you can buy a ticket which does allow you to join in the hunt. Either that or you befriend someone in the know and they take you miles up to where the eagles nest and air is rare and no one will notice if you find one of those creamy porcinis.  An easier option is to go the Corona Restaurant, order a chilled bottle of local white,  settle down on the terrace over looking the river and watch them prepare fresh porcini risotto – truly it is a treat!
